You walked in, lighting up the room with your signature smile, radiating warmth and waving at everyone telling them that there was no way you were going to miss the chance to say hello. As long as I’ve known Derek, I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. He was always positive, and of course had a smile on his face. I never saw him angry. Even when I gave him a short lead time to get a lot of work done, he never complained. I would apologize profusely, and then thank him for his really fast service, and Derek would always say “hey, that’s what we do.”
Anytime Derek was in our building, you knew it because he always came by to say hello to everyone. There was always a buzz of excitement when Derek came around, and a hug if needed. One day we were talking and he suddenly stopped and said to me “I never noticed how beautifully blue your eyes are.” I joked back “better to see you with my dear.” His kind comment made my week. He was so good at that.
I am a better person for having known him. I will never forget him and will miss him terribly. I will keep you all in my prayers. Gods blessings to you all.

When you first meet someone like Derek, you wonder if his larger than life personality was genuine. It was! I met Derek and his family through my 30+ year friendship with my BFF, his cousin Sharice. Through the years, what I always saw and received from Derek was joy. Joy in the way he greeted me and my sons, joy in his smile, joy in his laughter and joy in the genuine and deep way he LOVED his family. I got to receive all of that because of being an "extended" family member. The last time I heard his voice was on a recent phone call with Sharice about the family reunion. He so loved her and loved his family. My grief is deep and my sorrow heavy. Every family has members that are the "glue" and that is what I saw in Derek. My prayers are plentiful as we all navigate to try to understand the why and how. To Aunt Classie, Uncle Jerry and family - my deepest condolences. While we grieve with you, please know how blessed we are still to have Derek's light shine upon us and watch over us from the best place that we know. As I have tried to put my personal thoughts in order- there aren't many Dereks in this life. How blessed am I to have had my life touched by someone so loving and kind.
