Derek Christianson

Derek Christianson, 56, died unexpectedly of natural causes on October 20, 2025.
Born August 8,1969, Derek grew up in Alpena, Michigan, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan Tech in Civil Engineering, and went to work for the Federal Highway Administration; his projects included Wolf Creek Pass in the Uintas of eastern Utah. Relocating to Alaska in 1999 to work for an engineering consultant, Derek made his home in Anchorage and enjoyed exploring the outdoors in all seasons with his family.
Derek worked for Michael Baker International for the past 15 years, managing more than 90 projects and playing a vital role in transportation planning and design throughout the state. He served on the UAA College of Engineering Advisory Board, volunteered during E-Week, and shared his expertise, insight, and creativity with Alaska's engineering community.
Beyond his technical skill, Derek was known for his generosity of spirit, his deep consideration of others, and his quiet humor. He was a natural mentor-patient, honest, and deeply invested in helping others grow. A "gentle giant," he challenged his colleagues to stretch beyond their comfort zones with the goal of helping them succeed. The lives he touched and guidance he gave will be felt for many years to come.
Derek was also an avid musician, playing bluegrass and "gypsy jazz" on guitar, mandolin, and banjo. He performed in several bands and led workshops at the Anchorage Folk Festival. He especially enjoyed guiding monthly jam sessions at the Writer's Block Bookstore.
Derek is survived by his wife, Dr. Marin Granholm, son Bjorn, parents Thomas Christianson and Dr. MaryAnn K. Crawford; sister Darcy (Huilin Gao) Christianson and their children, Max and Min Gao. Arrangements are being made by Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel in Anchorage, Alaska, and services will be held at a future date.
