Derek was born to Barbara Jean Cardwell and William Morehead on November 24, 1963. He was raised in Detroit, MI, where he spent most of his childhood and adult years.
Derek relocated to Columbus, where he lived out the rest of his life. On July 20, 2025, Derek Morehead, age 61, transitioned and received his wings surrounded by family and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Jean Cardwell; his father, William Morehead; his grandmother, Henrietta Cardwell; and his fraternal grandmother, Josephine E. Draper.
Derek is survived by his sister Royetta Robin Lee and Duan Marcel Lee (husband); nieces Brittany, Kelli, Chelsea; and a host of great nieces and nephews. His beautiful aunts, Joyce Storey and Elaine Mason; his Wife Lashea Williams; his son Darrius Morehead; his daughters Shereka Morehead and Zharia Williams; his grandsons Xantiago and Denero; his son Derek Windom Morehead; his son Tyidus Wilkins; step-sons D'Angelo, D'Juaquan, Demetrius, and Delone Smith; along with ten grandchildren born to Lashea, whom he loved, cherished, and adored. Derek always expressed how much he loved all of his children and how proud he was of their accomplishments. A host of cousins whom he loved dearly.
Derek served as an MP in the US Army. He was an honorable soldier and always lived up to every measure.
Throughout Derek’s life, he embodied strength, resilience, and love. His tall stature, big spirit, and unforgettable laugh touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Derek was brave, facing life’s challenges head-on and conquering adversity.
His legacy of love, determination, and strength will continue to inspire us all as we navigate life's journey. Derek's impact extended far beyond his time with us, leaving behind cherished memories and meaningful connections. From his dedication to his wife, children, grandchildren, and family and friends, Derek leaves a legacy of perseverance, courage, and important life lessons. As we gather to celebrate his life, let us carry forward the lessons he taught us and honor his memory in all that we do.
As we mourn Derek’s loss, let us also celebrate the beautiful life he lived. His legacy is reflected not only in the memories we hold dear but also in the lives he touched and the hearts he uplifted. His enduring legacy reminds us of the power of strength, love, and wisdom to transcend time. May we honor Derek's memory by living our lives with the same enduring qualities he showed.
