Derek Ray Sissom, of O’Fallon, MO, passed away surrounded by his closest family and lifelong, most cherished family friends, on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the age of 50, after putting up the most courageous battle against cancer and the side effects from his treatments over the past 3 ½ years. Derek is the beloved spouse of Deanna Sissom; most cherished son of Peggy and Mike Moorhouse; adored grandson of Mary Ann Moorhouse; dearly loved nephew of Darlene (Kevin) Vukmir, Danny Moorhouse, Lisa Moorhouse, Rick (Darlene) Kinder, Wes (Debbie) Kinder, and is proceeded in death by his grandparents Max and Bo Kinder, grandparents Francie and Bill Sissom, and grandfather Don Moorhouse, and is the loved cousin and uncle of many. Derek treasured his goddaughter Sophie Kruse and lifelong friends Blake and Jenn Kruse.
Serving in the United States Army Reserves from 1993-1999 as Psychological Operations Specialist, Derek received the National Defense Service Medal and Expert Marksmanship Badge. Derek’s passion was his 28 years serving as a police officer, which included being a Detective with the St. Charles County Regional Drug Task Force; Field Training Officer; Crime Scene Technician; Traffic Crash Reconstructionist; Motor Officer; and Detective at St. Charles City Police Department and Crime Intervention Team Officer. He retired from the City of St. Charles Police Department as Detective 262 on February 28, 2025, after 25 years of service. In 2012, he received the Officer of the Year award from St. Charles Elks Lodge 690, recognizing his exemplary service and dedication.
As a proud Cardinal fan, he never missed an opportunity to rib his grandmother and aunt about the Cubs. Derek was the light at every party, the jokester at every turn, and the guy who could turn even the most ordinary moment into a story worth retelling. Though he is no longer with us, the memories he leaves behind — full of laughter, warmth, and quiet strength — will continue to guide and comfort those who loved him most. Those who knew him will carry his humor, his compassion, and his unwavering loyalty in their hearts forever. Derek was loved deeply by his family and friends and his loss leaves a void in their hearts that can never be replaced.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Derek’s wishes by making donations directly to BackStoppers, or by sending cash or check contributions to the St. Charles City Police Officers Association, whose support meant so much to us throughout his journey.
