Derek Earl Spain, 54 of Merritt, passed away at his home Friday, February 13, 2026.
Derek was a hardworking and dedicated man who spent many years as a planner with Nutrien, where he was respected for his knowledge, reliability, and steady work ethic. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Derek served his country honorably, spending the majority of his enlistment stationed in Guam. During his time overseas, he formed many lasting friendships and created memories that he carried with him throughout his life.
He found his greatest peace on the water. Whether fishing at sunrise, hunting in the early morning stillness, or simply spending time outdoors. He cherished time spent on the water and valued the simple, meaningful moments shared with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jasper “Jimmy” W. Spain, Jr.; maternal grandfather, Charlie Blount; maternal grandmother, Gertrude Wright; paternal grandparents, Jack & Vernell Spain.; aunt, Brenda Whitford, uncle, Barry Blount; and sister-in-law, Lissa Spain.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Morgan, Emma, and Blake Spain; his mother, Marie Spain; brother, Tommy Spain (Pam); niece, Dair Scott (Shane) and two nephews, Devan and Brody Spain; aunt, Irene Wright, uncles, Bruce Spain (Brenda), and Jimmy Whitford; along with many cousins and extended family members.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held at 6:30 pm Thursday, February 19th at Daniels-Sadler Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Fitzgerald officiating.
The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
