WAPAKONETA -- Derek James Staas, age 60 of Wapakoneta, passed Wednesday, October 29,2025. He was born November 13, 1964 in Lima, Ohio to the Terry J. Staas, who passed January 31, 2023 and Marilyn Repasz (Richard) Baker who survives in Lima.
Derek graduated from Shawnee High School in 1983 and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy. After his military service, he built a career with Nash-Finch, where he retired.
Derek lived life to the fullest and had a wide range of interests. He loved golfing, playing darts, and fishing, and he was an avid sports fan-always cheering on the Cincinnati Reds, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Cincinnati Bengals. A passionate coin collector, lover of word games, and keeping his mind sharp.
Derek was known for being the life of the party, a loyal friend, and spending time with those he loved. He had a soft spot for animals and never let stray cats go hungry. A fan of classic rock 'n' roll, Derek could often be found with music playing and a smile on his face.
Above all, Derek adored his grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Papaw D;" they were the light of his life. Derek will be remembered as a kind-hearted, genuine man who touched many lives with his humor, liveliness, and generosity.
Also surviving a daughter – Amanda (Luke) Uncapher of North Lewisburg, Ohio; 3 grandchildren – Lincoln, Hendrix, and Tinley; his twin brother – Deron Staas of Rockford, Illinois; a sister – Tricia (James) Rodgers of Glenelg, Maryland; a nephew – Alexander Rodgers; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. His service will begin at 12:00 followed by military rites.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
