Derek Matthew Tec, a beacon of love, adventure, and courage, left this world far too soon on October 6, 2024, following an unforeseen accident. Born on August 14, 2000, in the bustling city of Los Angeles, California, Derek's journey began as a bright light in the lives of those around him. He took his final breath surrounded by the serene beauty of Laguna Beach, California, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his loved ones.
Derek's formative years were spent in Houston, Texas, where he attended Cypress Creek High School. His passion for soccer was unmistakable as he proudly represented his school on the soccer field. The discipline and teamwork he learned through the sport were qualities that he carried throughout his life. After graduation, with the same zeal he approached every endeavor, Derek enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. His service to the country was marked by honor and distinction, and he rose to the rank of Corporal, serving as a Mortarman with commendable valor.
Upon his return to civilian life, Derek continued to serve his community by joining the Sheriff's Department in March 2023. As a Deputy assigned to the Central Jails Division, his colleagues revered him for his exemplary work ethic, professionalism, and unwavering commitment. Derek's dedication to his role was evident in every task he undertook, embodying the department's values and earning the respect of all who worked alongside him.
Derek's zest for life extended far beyond his professional pursuits. A fitness enthusiast, he took immense pride in his physical accomplishments, often found working out and exercising with a vigor that inspired others. His entrepreneurial spirit was equally robust, brimming with innovative ideas for small businesses that showcased his sharp business acumen. Derek's life was a testament to his belief in staying active and engaged, often juggling multiple jobs and ventures with a level of energy that was truly infectious.
The essence of Derek's spirit was adventure. His life was an expedition filled with joy and exploration, and he savored every moment. An animal lover, he held a special place in his heart for his girlfriend's cats, and his affection for all creatures spoke volumes about his compassionate nature. Derek's love for the world around him was boundless, and his legacy is a vivid tapestry of the lives he touched and the dreams he pursued.
Survived by his mother, Dalila Guerrero, his father, Moises Tec, his brothers, Anthony Tec and Michael Guerrero, and his sister, Darlene Sanchez, Derek's memory will be a guiding light for his family. His longtime girlfriend, Miriam Martinez, will carry the torch of his love, keeping the flames of his passion and dreams alive.
In the words of the great poet Maya Angelou, "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." Derek lived by this mantra, seizing every opportunity to create breathtaking moments, not just for himself but for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Derek Matthew Tec's life story is a reminder that every day is a gift to be unwrapped with enthusiasm and gratitude. His loving nature, adventurous spirit, and courageous heart will continue to motivate and inspire. Let us honor Derek's memory by living our lives with the same fervor and passion that he so naturally embodied. Let us take the torch he has passed on and illuminate the world with the brilliance of a life well-lived. Derek's journey on earth may have reached its sunset, but the afterglow of his spirit will shine eternally in the hearts of those he loved.
