Derrick Carpenter, affectionately known as "Coyote," was born on April 11, 1971, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He passed away on July 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a spirit that touched countless lives. Derrick dedicated 25 years of his life to GRay Trucking, where he started driving a truck at the tender age of 16. His coworkers became his second family, a bond forged through years of shared experiences, laughter, and camaraderie on the open road.
Derrick was not only known for his exceptional driving skills but also for his warm personality, which made a lasting impression on everyone he met. A true jokester at heart, he spread joy and kindness wherever he went, embodying a loving, caring, and selfless spirit. He had an innate ability to connect with children and animals, a testament to the gentleness that defined his character.
A proud graduate of Watts High School in 1989, Derrick reflected fondly on his younger years while cherishing the relationships built over a lifetime. Those who knew him will remember him for his quick wit and his joyous laughter, which echoed among friends and family. His remarkable ability to lift spirits and foster happiness is a gift that will be missed immensely.
Derrick is survived by his mother, Anna Belle Carpenter; girlfriend, Audi Angus; sister, Rhonda Hair; and his adored nephews, Daniel Walker, Adrian Mendoza, Camron Hair, and Stephen Elk. He also enjoyed the joy of being a great-uncle to Myles Mendoza. The love and connection he fostered within these relationships were among his proudest accomplishments, particularly his closeness with his mother, who always held a special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Rex Carpenter; brother, Stevie Hair; maternal grandparents, Tecumseh Ned Hair and Senia; paternal grandparents, Andrew and Sylvia Carpenter; as well as several uncles and an aunt – Faye Upchurch, Danny Hair, Lacy Hair, and Watson Hair. Each of these family members leaves behind cherished memories that will carry forward in the hearts of those who loved Derrick.
Derrick's visitation will be held on July 17, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Roberts & Hart Funeral Home located in Westville, Oklahoma. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place on July 18, 2025, beginning at 2:00 PM, at the same location.
