Derrick Lee Carr, Sr. was born November 8, 1950 in Salisbury, Maryland. He was the oldest of five children, born to Berley and Ruth Carr. As a military family, they traveled throughout the United States and Europe. He graduated from Wicomico Sr. High School in 1969 and joined the United States Air Force. He served 15 years on active duty and was trained as a Traffic Management Specialist, Flight Traffic Specialist, and Military Customs Inspector. Thereafter, he was a Civil Servant at Dover Air Force Base from 1988 to 2010.

After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, attending jazz concerts, and gathering with children and grandchildren. He was a master chef at home, always trying new recipes. He loved spending hours listening to and studying jazz music and playing chess. He had a passion for reading, meditating, and growing through the understanding of scripture.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes, of 41 years; children Maria, Dara, Tatiana, and Devika (husband Garen); one brother, Terance "teddy" (wife Juanita) and two sisters, Cheryl "Cherry" and Velda "Denise"; grandchildren Zoe, Zuriah, Julian, Kimani, Charli, August, and Winter; and the Dashiell family. He was preceded in death by his son, Derrick Jr., younger brother, Michael Carr, Sr., and his parents.

Derrick transitioned on September 19, 2025, at the age of 74.
