Mr. Dewey Grant Smith, 84, of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away Friday, January 30, 2026, at the Columbus Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at The Living Word Church, 3985 Hamilton Road, Columbus, GA with Rev. Michael Brookins officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. EST Wednesday evening at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL.
Mr. Smith was born June 6, 1941 in Rockingham, NC, son of the late Robert Lee Smith and Nonnie Gertrude Covington Smith. He was a Heavy Equipment Technician with Alexander Contracting and retired with over 39 years of service. Mr. Smith enjoyed word search puzzles and attending to his cats, as well as the strays he found. Above all, he enjoyed studying his Bible daily. Mr. Smith was a faithful member of The Living Word Church, where he served on the church board, was an usher and was always helping with some type of project. Additionally, Mr. Smith loved working on classic tractors and spending time with his family.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Tony Hicks and two brothers, Dennis Smith and Ernie Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Judy Smith; two daughters, Lora Turk (Hasan) and Tena Lester (Dwayne); two sons, Robert Smith (Amy) and Chris Hicks (Heather); a sister, Mary Williams; three brothers, Keith Smith, Weldon Smith and Jerry Smith (Cathy); grandchildren, Katelyn Smith, Mason Smith, Parker Giglio, Presley Giglio, Victoria Hicks, Sierra Brody (Joseph), Anna Hicks, Carlie Lee (Chris), Emma Hicks, Landon Lester and Jonah Lester; great-grandchildren, Grant, Clarke and Carsten; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Columbus Hospice, 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, GA 31909.
