Diane Cousins, a beloved educator, world traveler, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and lifelong learning. She was born on November 27, 1939, in Decatur, Alabama, to Sallie Mae and Henry Hanson.

At the age of three, Diane moved with her family to Gadsden, Alabama, where she was raised and completed her early education. She later attended the University of Alabama, beginning a lifelong commitment to education that would shape both her career and her impact on countless lives.

Diane devoted many years to teaching, sharing her passion for learning with students in Decatur, Alabama; Wilmington, Delaware; Georgetown, Virginia; Atlanta, Georgia; and Lurton, England. Her dedication to education led her to pursue advanced studies, and in 1970 she earned a degree in Educational Administration from the University of Georgia.

In 1971, Diane transitioned into higher education administration, where she continued to inspire and guide students. She served as Dean of Women at Troy State University, Dean of Students at Brenau College, and Associate Dean of Students at High Point University. Her leadership and compassion left a lasting mark on the institutions and individuals she served.

In 1981, Diane began an exciting new chapter as an independent furniture sales representative. This role allowed her to travel extensively around the world, fulfilling her adventurous spirit and deepening her appreciation for different cultures. Her love of travel was matched only by her love of gardening and her remarkable ability to form and maintain friendships across the globe.

From 1989 to 2007, Diane made her home in Wales, embracing life abroad before eventually returning to the field of education, where she concluded her professional career between 2007 and 2010.

Diane will be remembered for her extraordinary kindness, her boundless curiosity, and her unwavering commitment to the people and communities she touched. She had a rare gift for connecting with others and nurturing lifelong friendships.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sallie Mae Westcott; her father, Henry Hanson; her stepfather, Daniel Westcott; her sister, Martha Rose Barden; and her mentor, Sir John Glubb.

She is survived by her loving sister, Susan (Jimmy) Cooper; her brother, Daniel (Shari) Westcott; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends around the world.

Diane was a member of St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal Church. A memorial service will be held in May.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Seashore Highlands for their care and support.

Diane’s life was one of purpose, generosity, and adventure. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
