Diane Kay Froiland, 66 of Brookings, SD passed away Thursday November 30, 2023 surrounded by her family, at the Brookings Health System, Brookings, SD. Memorial Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Friday, December 15, 2023 at Rude's Funeral Home with a 6:00pm Celebration of Life Service at the Rude's Funeral Home.
Diane Kay (Hagey) Froiland was born on August 8, 1957 in Cherokee, IA, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Jaminet) Hagey. She grew up in Marcus, IA and was raised in her faith at Holy Name Catholic Church where she was baptized, had her first communion, and was confirmed. Diane attended Marcus Community School from Kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated in 1976. She furthered her education at Ellsworth Community College and graduated from there in 1979. Following graduation, she moved to Brookings and began working at the Brookings Telephone Office. In 1985, Diane heard of a "cute, single" dentist named Rick Froiland that had moved to town. She made an appointment so she could get his number and the rest was history. Rick and Diane were married at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings on June 6, 1987.
Following their marriage, Rick and Diane were blessed with two sons, Justin and Erick. Diane was a devoted mother and had fond memories of her years as a "hockey mom", traveling with her boys to and from their many hockey games and tournaments throughout their high school years. Diane's six grandchildren were the light of her life and she spent any second she could with them. Making memories with her family was always a priority for Diane and she spent the last years of her life doing just that with trips to Disney World, the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, a Minnesota Vikings game, and a visit to Arizona to see family, among countless day-to-day memories. A yearly family reunion at the Marcus Fair to spend time with nieces and nephews was always a highlight for her as well. In the rare moments she wasn't being "grandma", you could find her on the phone with her sister Deb, spending time in the sun, or shopping and out to lunch with dear friends. Diane was generous, loyal, independent, and strong.
After a year-long battle with cancer and surrounded by those that loved her most, she went to Heaven on November 30, 2023.
Diane is survived by son Justin (Nicole) and granddaughters Kinzie, Harper, and Everly; son Erick (Jaimee) and grandchildren Brynn, Bennett, and Beckham; sister Deb (Conrad) Ebert; mother-in-law Mary Froiland; sister-in-law Barb (Bob) Johnson, and many treasured nieces and nephews.
She was welcomed Home by her soulmate Rick, parents Robert and Mary Hagey, brothers Steve Hagey and Grant Hagey, and father-in-law Dick Froiland. Blessed be her memory.
