Dick Hoadley

Dick Hoadley passed away peacefully at his home in Winterset, Iowa, at the age of 86 on Monday, November 25, 2024.

Richard "Dick" Eugene Hoadley was born at home in Greenfield, Iowa, Adair County, Grove Township, on March 16, 1938, the son of Willard Floyd Hoadley and Stella Lona (Piper) Hoadley. Dick attended grade school at Grove #7 and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1956. He completed 1 1/2 years of college at Maryville University in Missouri and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and later received a basic accounting diploma from American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

On February 14, 1960, he was united in marriage to Ann Crawford at Webster Church in Madison County. To this union was born one son (David) and two daughters (Debra and Dawn). He entered the United States Army Reserve in August of 1960 where he took his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and was trained as a clerk/typist. He then belonged to the 103rd Administrative Company in Des Moines and the 306th Quartermaster Company in Ames, serving as personnel sergeant.

Dick worked in the office at Cargill in Des Moines for six years as purchasing agent and payroll clerk. He enjoyed this job immensely, but the thing he talked about the most was being a catcher for the company softball team. They won the city championship. Dick left Cargill to farm his father-in-law's farm in 1966 in Adair County, Harrison Township. He sold seed corn for Pfister Hybrid for 25 years. Dick retired from actively farming in 2007, but remained living on the farm until 2012, when he and his wife moved to Winterset to be closer to their kids. 

A lifelong servant to his community, Dick was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. He invited others to be involved in church activities and encouraged members to give their testimonies of faith. His civic involvement extended beyond his church as he held numerous leadership roles, including: 16 years as township ASCS committeeman, 10 years on county ASCS committee (now FSA committee), 8 years as chairperson on county ASCS committee, member of Adair County Extension Council, 3 years as Chairperson of County Extension Council, 2 terms as Adair County supervisor, member of 4-H & Youth Committee, 7 years as 4-H Leader, Adair County Fair sheep superintendent, Harrison Township clerk, Harrison Township Trustee, Past President of Adair County Pork Producers, Adair County Lamb Producers and Adair County Cattle Producers. He was awarded the Soil Conservation Award in 1983.

Dick played semipro ball for the Greenfield Hawks, and also was licensed as an IHSAA umpire. He enjoyed square-dancing, fishing, helping 4-H kids, and serving on many community activities. But, his grandkids gave him the most joy. He loved sports, especially following the Hawkeyes. Dick will be remembered for his dedication to his family, faith, and community.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers (Don Hoadley, Jack Hoadley, and Kenny Hoadley); and five sisters (Eloise Smith, Roberta Ehrenfried, Ruth Lovell, Lona Teter, and Sara Cramer).

He is survived by his wife, Ann (64 years of marriage); his children, David Hoadley (wife Sandy), Debra Hoadley, and Dawn Jurgens (husband Steve); grandchildren, Taryn McKune, Morgan Burchartz (husband Robbie), Sam Jurgens, Nick Jurgens, Jack Jurgens, Emily Jurgens; step-grandchildren, Calista Mills (husband Dan) and Maria Edwards (husband Nathan); step-great-grandchildren, Andrew Mills and Olivia Mills; sister-in-law, Lois Hoadley, including many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am, prior to the service. Dick will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in rural Stuart. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a future designation.
