Dick Jeffers was born to Earl & Irene (Sears) Jeffers as "Dickie Joe" on March 22, 1935. He passed away on May 26, 2025, at the Cherry County Hospital in
Valentine, NE.
Dick attended school and graduated from Valentine High School in 1953 where he was very active in sports and other activities. On March 24, 1952, Dick married Almira Darlene Shelbourn in Julesburg, CO. The summer following graduation, he worked for Mullin Steel Co. as a bookkeeper and also did some painting. Dick attended Chadron State College from 1955-57 where he did his under-graduate pre-dental studies. While in school at Chadron, he worked for Weber Paint Co. In the fall he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln Dental College until graduation in 1961. While in dental college, he worked at Gatto's Liquor Store as a clerk. After completion of dental school, he enrolled in the United States Air Force on July 20, 1961. He joined the Air Force to "see the world" and ended up being stationed at Lincoln Air Force base. He was discharged with honors from the Air Force as a captain on July 28, 1972.
Dick was in private practice in Lincoln before moving to Valentine in 1965. Dick purchased a private dental practice from Dr. Tom Cruise. During his dental career, Dick had the pleasure of practicing with his son, Bob, for many years. Dick enjoyed practicing dentistry for 50 years. In his career, he had the pleasure of having many patients which led to life long friendships.
Dick & Almira raised five children. After Almira's passing in 2000, Dick married Kim Gierau in April 2003. He was then blessed with another daughter, Brittany. Dick and Kim were married for 22 years.
In Dick's 90 years of life, he was involved in numerous community organizations and activities. Among those being Valentine City Council, Valentine School Board of Education for 14 years, Rotary for 50+ years where he was a past president and a regular volunteer at the blood drive, past Elder at the Presbyterian Church, lifetime member of the Sandhills Area Foundation, Sandhills Investment Club, Nebraska Beef Club at the University of Nebraska, and appointed by the Governor to the State Board of Health. Dick was honored to receive the Pat Murphy Memorial Award in 1972 for being the biggest Valentine Badger fan. In 2019, Dick was honored by receiving the Heart City Heart Award. He was proud to be on the Veteran's Memorial Monument Committee. One of Dick's biggest passions was being an advocate for Valentine and the surrounding communities.
Dick had a passion for Nebraska Husker athletics. He was a season ticket holder of Nebraska football tickets since 1961. Along with friends, Dick attended most home football games in addition to many away games.
Among Dick's hobbies were hunting, fishing, and golf. Dick was among the many other golfers in the community that helped build Deer Park Golf Course. He was a founding member of The Prairie Club and enjoyed golfing at Frederick Peak Golf Club since 2017. He was a member, and former director, of the Central Nebraska Senior Golf Association. Dick was one of the best guides in the area whether it be hunting turkeys, deer, or elk. He had lots of great memories taking friends, grandchildren, and great grandchildren hunting. He also had lots of fish stories to tell.
After retirement, Dick became a regular at 6:00 am breakfast at various establishments and then coffee (or dice rolling) at 9:30 am. He had a close relationship with two different groups of guys.
Dick is survived by his wife, Kim, son, Robert and husband, Robb Green, of Bailey, CO, daughter, Patricia and husband, Craig Potter, of Lincoln, NE, son-in-law, Bill Seberger, of Lexington, NE, son, Thomas and fiance, Carin, of Grand Island, NE, son, Richard and wife, Deb, of
Valentine, NE, and Step-daughter, Brittany and husband, Matt Benzing, of
Valentine, NE. One of Dick's greatest joys in life were his 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, the addition of one great, great grandchild to make five generations of Jeffers, and a host of other family members and friends.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Almira, daughter, Pamela Seberger, and great granddaughter, baby Almira Rose Ward.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Presbyterian Church in Valentine. The public is asked to wear Husker or Badger attire at the funeral.
