Dieter Schmidt

Dieter Richard Albert Schmidt, 80 years old, of Kinnelon, N.J. passed away quietly on the morning of July 1st, 2023.
Born to Albert and Elisabeth Schmidt in Hanau, Germany, Dieter arrived on Ellis Island with his mother when he was just 12 years old. In the U.S. he lived in various boroughs of NYC before moving to N.J. spending most of his years in Paterson and Haledon with his family. He was a proud American who served his country in the Air Force and later became a Police Officer for the Paterson Police Dept. When he retired in 1994, he moved to Pennsylvania, then South Carolina and eventually back to New Jersey.
Dieter was tough, loyal, and as sweet as they come. A legend to all those who really knew him. Most of all he was a loving husband for 54 years to the late Sharon Schmidt (nee Morse); wonderful father of Susan Ann Schmidt, Lori Lynn Smith and her husband Chad, and the late Tammy Sue Schmidt; amazing "Opa" to Patrick, Drew, Sophia, and Landon.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at O'Boyle Funeral Home 309 Broad St. Bloomfield on Saturday July 8th from 12-2p.m. A service will be held during the visitation.
