Dixie Lea Nelson, 77, of Gravois Mills, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home on September 3, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Dixie was born on September 29, 1948. In Perry, Iowa, to Alvin "Gib" and Lois (Kenan) Smith. She grew up in Perry and was a proud graduate of Perry High School. On August 25, 1967, she married the love of her life, Dennis Ray Nelson, in Dawson, Iowa. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with three children: Jason (who gained his angel wings at birth) Ward, and Paige.
Dixie dedicated over 32 years of service to the United States Postal Service, working at the Bulk Mail Center in Des Moines, Iowa. She was known for her warm spirit, kindness, and generosity. She loved her plants, flowers, and pets, and her home was always open to anyone in need. Dixie enjoyed sewing, often creating personalized pillowcases that remain treasured keepsakes for many family members and friends. Above all, she found her greatest joy in her family. She was always eager to share stories about her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and of course, Eddie.
Dixie and Dennis spent many years working together to build their dream retirement home at the Lake of the Ozarks, a place that quickly became a gathering spot filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories for family and friends.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Dennis, of Gravois Mills, MO; her son Ward (Kathy) Nelson of Union, MO; her daughter Paige (Yance Woody) of Churdan, IA; her grandchildren Kody (Jeni) Nelson, Casey (Wanda Barr) Nelson, Allison (Zach Wiggins) Lansman, Dylan (Bonnie) Lansman, Grason (Shelby Stein) Lansman, and Kasha (Max Barlean) Lansman; her great-grandchildren Aurora, Grace, Emmy, Emma,Harper, Waylon, and Dixie Lea, with two more soon to arrive; and her sister Sarah Neu of Des Moines, IA. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, Gib and Lois Smith; her parents-in-law, Stanley and Edith Nelson; her son, Jason Nelson; her brothers George, Bill, and Rick; and her sister Eleanor.
Dixie will be remembered for her loving heart, her unwavering kindness, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
