Dolores Backhus Obituary

Dolores Adeline Backhus

December 29, 1930 - December 19, 2024

Kansas City, Missouri - Dolores (Dee) Adeline Backhus (nee Schick) 93, passed away December 19, 2024 in Kansas City, Missouri. A native of Tampa, Kansas, she moved to Kansas City in 1952 where she was married to Martin R. Backhus also of Tampa, Kansas. She worked primarily in the banking industry at Farmer's Trust Bank and Broadway National Bank before working in travel at AAA. She was simply the life of the party.

Even though she was born in the 1930s, she was a contemporary woman and instilled in her children an appreciation for art, travel and most of all music. She earned the nickname, "Diva Dee" because she never wore white after Labor Day, went out without make-up or failed to wear the most slimming black outfit she could find, even in the memory care unit at Kingswood. She always taught there wasn't anything you couldn't do, and she carried that spirit through her life.

Dee is survived by her daughter, Terri, daughter in law, Avian Bear, and son, Greg, daughter in law, Jane Cepeda-Backhus and her grandchildren, Andrew and Warren as well as her great grandson, Gavin.

Donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Kansas City at www.alz.org/kansascity. A private service will be held in Lee's Summit, Missouri. A party celebrating her memory will be held at a later date.
