Dolores Devitt

Dolores M. Devitt, Elkhorn, NE, formerly of Horace, ND, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025. She was born in Lisbon, ND, on March 16, 1928, to Ole and Gertie Jorgenson. She was the youngest of seven children. Her father passed away when she was six months old. At the age of five, her mother moved to Milnor, ND, where she grew up and attended school. She returned to Lisbon, ND, for her junior and senior year and graduated from Lisbon High School. After graduation, she moved to West Fargo, ND, and was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Fargo, ND.
On December 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to James L. Devitt at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon, ND. They moved to Washington state and lived there for four years. They then returned to West Fargo, ND, where she was employed as a secretary for Super Valu Stores in the Engineering, Development and Advertising Departments.
During her working years, she also helped her husband with raising cattle and sheep. She would help with treating and butchering beef and dressed many chickens through the years. She loved working with flowers and, at one time, had as many as 50 varieties in her garden. She also enjoyed baking pies, rosettes, krumkake, cinnamon rolls and many other goodies. Her other interests included making many different crafts and her weekly bowling league. Her team won League Champions two years in a row.
Dolores was a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church in West Fargo, ND. She taught Sunday School for several years, served on the Steward Committee and Funeral Committee and was a member of Rebecca Circle.
In 2007, Dolores and her husband moved to Omaha, Nebraska, to be closer to their children, where she became a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Dolores is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Allen Northrop, and her son, Randy Devitt; four grandchildren, Christopher (Brenda) Northrop, Matthew (Amy) Northrop, Seth (Michaela) Northrop, and Courtney (Scott) Schmidt; 18 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Ann Devitt, of Buffalo, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, of 65 years, her son, Michael Dean, who died as an infant, her parents and stepfather, Helmer Blegen, four brothers and their spouses John (Gertrude) Jorgenson, Melvin (Meryle) Jorgenson, Herman (Evelyn) Jorgenson, and Clement (Lola) Jorgenson, and two sisters and their spouses, Violet (Fred) Palloch and Verna (Fred) Schuessler.
Celebration of Life Service: Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at 11 AM, at West Funeral Home, West Fargo, ND, with visitation one hour before the service.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon, ND.
