Dominic De Matteis
Age 82, passed away early Saturday morning, October 19, 2024 after a long illness. Born in Villa S'Angelo, L'Aquila, Italy, on August 22, 1942, to the late Michael and Clarice (D'Ascenzo) De Matteis, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Baldo (Myrna) and Agostino. Prior to immigrating to Canton, Ohio in the mid-1960s, he attended seminary in Italy.
A member of Guardian Angels Parish at St. Joan of Arc Church, he graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Akron, where he also played soccer at the Division I collegiate level. His work history includes Perry Rubber and Babcock & Wilcox while living in Canton, followed by moves to Costa Mesa, California and El Toro, California, where he worked for Control Components, Inc., as well as different companies focusing on the aerospace and electro-mechanical industries.
A devoted son, upon retirement in 2005, he returned to Canton to care for his ailing mother. A kind, gentle, quiet man, Dominic's primary interests in life were centered around family, followed by being an avid golfer, skier, bocce ball player, soccer fan and wine connoisseur.
He is survived by his brother Joseph (Maria) DeMatteis, sister Dora (Fausto) Gioiello, and sister-in-law Miranda (Agostino) De Matteis, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed by many, but especially his family.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, October 25th at the Rossi Family Funeral Home from 9:30-10:30 a.m., A Mass of Christian burial to follow at 11 a.m. at Guardian Angels Parish at St. Joan of Arc Church. Entombment in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an Alzheimer's Foundation of choice. The family would like to extend their thanks to Crossroads Hospice, Aviva Hills Assisted Living, and The Inn at University Village for their excellent care and compassion.
