It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lance C. DeMatteis. Lance was at the McClure Miller Respite House on January 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family when he went peacefully to be with the Lord.
Lance was born on March 8, 1959, the first son of Clement and LaVina De Matteis. He was predeceased by his loving father Clement, who died in 2007.
Lance was such a kind and peaceful man, and he loved to be in nature. He graduated from Northern Michigan University, summa cum laude, majoring in conservation and law enforcement. Soon after graduation he ventured east and ended up spending the rest of his life in Vermont. He met his wife Susie in 1988. They were married in Burlington, Vermont, in 1991. They resided in Waterville, Vermont, for 14 years, where they married and had their two children, Jordan and Katelyn. They moved to Colchester, Vermont, in 2003 and have remained there for their days together.
Lance worked many years in the retail business, most recently selling cars for Saturn of South Burlington and Burlington Subaru.
Lance is survived by his loving spouse of 33 years, Susan (Susie) DeMatteis; his son Jordan DeMatteis and his wife Hannah of Colchester, Vermont, and their child (Lance's first grandchild) to be born this summer; his daughter Katelyn Goad and her husband Zack of Utica, New York; his mother LaVina Gay De Matteis of Shorewood, Illinois; his brother Scott De Matteis and his wife Kelli of Plainfield, Illinois, and their children: Dominic, Jack and Vincent. He also leaves many dear cousins in Illinois as well as extended family in Vermont. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Lois Bissonette of Burlington, Vermont, and brothers-in-law Peter Ploof of Burlington, Vermont, and Gary Ploof of Port Charlotte, Florida. He was predeceased by his father-in-law Raymond Ploof in 2018, his brother-in-law David Ploof in 2002 and his sister-in-law Karen Ploof in 2021.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, from 4:00 until 6:00 pm at the Ready Funeral Home, 261 Shelburne Road, in Burlington, Vermont. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 12 pm (noon ) at Holy Cross Church, Colchester with a luncheon to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lance's name to the American Cancer Society.

I met Lance my freshman year at Northern Michigan University. We were friends and roommates and after graduation headed east to seek our fortune. We landed in Burlington VT, a year later I went back to Illinois and he stayed on until his passing. What an adventure! I´m so glad he thrived out there in such a beautiful place with love and family. God bless and thank you Susie for reaching out.

Susie, Jordan and Katelyn,
My deepest condolences to the loss of Lance, and to the DeMatteis families.

Although I did not share much time with my cousin, I have such good memories on the Denton farm, and how he always made an effort to engage with me despite me being so much younger. He had a kindness that could put the most anxious at ease. My Dad and Mom always had such good things to say about him and his family.

Rest in Peace Lance. We carry you now in our hearts and memories.

Dear Susie, Jordan and Katelyn,
Please accept my sincere sympathy to you at the passing away of your dear husband and father. I have good memories of all of you attending Mass at Holy Church when I was pastor there. It seems that Lance was too young to pass away. I will pray for his eternal happiness in the eternal happiness of heaven. I will also be praying for you and your loved ones during this difficult time of your loss.
May the Lord comfort you with His loving care!
Fr. Roger Charbonneau, former pastor
