Don Baker Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Edwards Funeral Home & Cremations - Kinston on Mar. 6, 2026.
Don Allen Baker, age 83, of Hickory, NC, passed away on January 27, 2026. A man of defined melody, rhythm, and a deep devotion to his loved ones, Don leaves behind a legacy of music that resonated across the Carolinas and beyond.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, 11:00 AM, at Westview Cemetery in Kinston, NC.

Born in Kinston, NC, to the late Douglas Lonnie Baker and Ruby Barnes Baker, Don grew up with a horn in his hand and a song in his heart. A late 1960 graduate of Grainger High School, he went on to study at East Carolina University before embarking on a distinguished career as a professional musician.

An accomplished keyboardist and trumpeter, Don was a cornerstone of the beach music scene. He toured professionally with The Monzas, preforming on their hit "Instant Love" and showcasing his songwriting talents on the B-side, "Social Unrest." His musical journey continued well into the new millennium as he performed with The Sensational Epics out of Alanta. His contributions to the genre were formally recognized with his induction into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame.

Don was blessed with two great loves in his life. He was married for 51 years to his beloved wife, Cheryl Bruffey Baker, with whom he built a beautiful life and family. Following Cheryl's passing, Don found a "second angel" in Debra Caywood, whom he met in 2015. His children remained eternally grateful to Debra for restoring his spirit and bringing love and life back into his world during his final decade.

When he wasn't on stage or behind a keyboard, Don could be found cheering on his favorite team as a lifelong, die-hard Tarheels fan. He retired from Airserv in 2005, allowing him more time to focus on his family and his passions.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Cheryl; and his siblings, Douglas Baker, Jr., Billy Baker, and Judy Baker Thorton.

Don is survived by his partner in life, Debra Caywood of Hickory, NC; his son, Tony Baker of Taylorsville, SC; his daughter, Donna Baker McCarthy of Clearwater, FL; and his granddaughters, Hailey McCarthy and Erin Schadt (James) both of Clearwater, FL.
