Donald Wallace Bell, known affectionately as Don to his friends and loved ones, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on April 23, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on May 2, 1938, in
Niles, Michigan, to the late Frank and Rose (Bakeman) Bell, he spent the entirety of his rich and fulfilling life within the peaceful bounds of his beloved home state, drawing his last breath in St. Joseph, Michigan.
A true outdoorsman at heart, Don's love for the wide-open spaces was unparalleled. He found solace and joy in the simplicity of old westerns and the tranquil hours spent sitting outdoors by his garage, watching the world unfold in the calm rhythms of nature. He was an avid fisherman, with trout fishing being a cherished pastime, alongside deer hunting with both bow and rifle-a testament to his marksmanship and deep respect for the wilderness.
A loving patriarch, Don embraced the title of "Papa" with both pride and humility. His devotion to family was unwavering; he did everything within his power for his children, embodying the role of a good provider. His gentle demeanor and helpful spirit made him a friendly presence in his community, while at home, his love knew no bounds. He delighted in playing ball with his grandchildren, a simple pleasure that underscored his caring and thoughtful nature.
Judith (Toy) Bell, his devoted wife, was the cornerstone of his life. Together, they navigated the ebbs and flows of life with grace and unwavering support for one another. His legacy lives on through his children, Kelly (Jeff Kuseske) Camp and Mark Bell, who remember him as a caring and devoted father. His grandchildren, Chase, Jolie, and Gage Camp, as well as William Beer, will cherish memories of their Papa, whose love for them was as clear as the sparkling waters he so fondly fished, sisters-in-law Shirley Bell, Donna Pierson, Mary Gillesby, and Carol Martin, and brothers-in-law, Al Mott, Gary Huston, and Terry Miller.
Don was the cherished brother of the late Bonnie Pence and Larry Bell, sharing with them the unbreakable bonds of family and kinship. Together, they navigated the passages of life, carrying forward the values and traditions passed down by their parents.
Those who knew Don remember him as a man of integrity, someone who stood firm in his commitments as a husband, father, sibling, and friend. He approached life with both a sense of adventure and a profound warmth for those he held dear. His thoughtful and quiet strength was a guiding light for many, and his absence will be deeply felt by all.
