Don Woodrow "Sonny" Gibson, 78, of Gaston, SC died March 13, 2024, at his home. All services will be private. The family will receive friends at the home of Teresa Reed in Winnsboro, SC on Sunday March 17 from 2 – 4 pm.
Born in Great Falls on January 2, 1946, to the late Woodrow Wilson Gibson and Sara Moore Gibson, Sonny as he was affectionately called, was a great man that never met a stranger. He enjoyed music, beaches, travel, and good eats. He had several jobs over his lifetime. To name a few, he worked for Stevens Weir during the building of I-77, drove semis for Porter and Loflin in Great Falls, and Snider Trucking in Lugoff. He also worked for JP Stevens Mills in Great Falls, and Stone Manufacturing in Columbia. He was a man of many talents. After retiring, he was the loving caregiver to his disabled wife. He passed away peacefully in his sleep and will forever be missed.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 60 years, Johnnie Ruth Hinson Gibson; daughters, Donna Gibson Loftin (David) of Edgemoor, and Teresa Gibson Reed (Steve) of Winnsboro; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; brother, Bobbie Lee Gibson (Elizabeth) of Raleigh; sister, Sara Ann Broome (Pat) of Great Falls, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Sonny is predeceased by his sisters, Joel Layne Hayes and Janet Merle Landercasper; and his daughter, Debra Ann Grubbs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Sonny's memory to a charity of one's choice.
