Donald I. Adelman the loving husband to Audrey Adelman for 65 years, passed away at his Melrose home on May 14, 2024. He was 93 years old and until recently had been working full-time and exercising every day. Born in Boston to his late parents Jack & Jean Adelman, Don was raised in Malden and was a graduate of Malden High School. A gifted self-taught tradesman and general contractor, he bought his first rental properties in his early twenties. He served 6 years in the US Navy Reserve. He earned a degree in Business Management from Boston University, which he used in his remodeling & trades work, as well as his rental property management. He joined his late uncle David Maller and had a long and proud career with his sons, operating the family-owned lumber yard, Commonwealth Lumber Inc.
In 1959, Don married the love of his life, Audrey Shulman and was a caring, loving, and devoted husband until his last breath. Even when it was hard to understand his speech due to illness, she and we could still appreciate hearing his "I love you so much". He and Audrey were world travelers. Travelling frequently to their condos in South Florida, enjoying cruising the Caribbean and exploring sites in Europe, usually together with family and close friends. He also enjoyed taking his sons skiing during every school vacation. He was an avid skier as well, joining his friends in the Hickory Dickory Docs Ski Club every Wednesday until the age of 87.
He was a devoted father to his sons, Andrew & his wife May, Jay & his wife Jennifer, and Eric & his husband Tony. He was proud of and deeply loved his grandchildren Justin, Brittany, Joseph and Jared (and all their pets).
Services on Friday May 17 at 11:00 AM. Condolence calls may be made at his late residence on Friday May 17 from 2-8 PM. Eric & Tony will also accept condolence calls at their home on Sunday May 19 from 2-6PM, with minyan service at 5:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Don's name may be made to Visiting Nurse & Community Care www.thevisitingnurses.com or a charity of one's choice.

Dear Audrey and family, I was deeply sadden to recently hear of Don's passing. He was such a gracious and compassionate person who always had a smile on his face and seemed to enjoy life to its fullest. I remember being so impressed about his annual family & friends trips to ski resorts even into his 80's! Don's memories will remain with us all who had the fortune to know and love him. Rose and I send our deepest sympathies to you and all family members.

Helena and I are very saddened by the news of the death of our family friend Don. Don lived his life with dignity, grace, family and love. Hard working, humble and fair minded, it was very easy to be in his circle of friends of which we were privileged to be included. He made everyone happy to be in his welcoming presence and, as hard it is to know we can't talk to him, it would be an insult to him to have his legacy be one that would cause us pain. I never saw Don without his trademark smile, a smile that came easy to his face. I want Audrey and her family to know that we care...Don was quite a guy!!

I believe I was one of the first babysitters for the Adelman boys many years ago. Audrey and Don were like second parents to me. I always admired their loving relationship.

Don, was a caring and generous person, when I was young he would take us for rides in his Rambler convertible, I´ll always remember those days. RIP MR. A
