Elder Donald Leroy Alford Jr.

It is with deep sorrow and reverence that we announce the passing of Elder Donald Leroy Alford Jr., who was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Known for his vibrant spirit, unwavering faith, and lifelong dedication to God's work, Elder Alford leaves behind a legacy of joy, love, and spiritual strength that will never be forgotten.
Born on the evening of September 11, 1962, Elder Alford's journey began long before his birth, as his parents, Bishop Donald L. Alford, Sr. and 1st Lady Mary Alford were reminded early on that he was a child destined for greatness. From the start, his life was marked by spiritual warfare, a battle between light and darkness that would shape his ministry and deepen his devotion. As a young child, he was known for his rambunctious spirit, always ready with a mischievous joke or a playful prank. Yet, alongside this playful side, he had a deep and abiding love for the Lord, and it was clear to all that he was being prepared for something greater. Elder Alford admired and emulated both his father, a beloved pastor and Bishop, and his maternal grandmother, who nurtured his love for the Word of God. He spent countless hours learning the scriptures and seeking to understand the teachings that would later guide his own ministry. His ability to expound on the Word was a gift he cherished, and his powerful sermons often resonated with all who heard them.
A lover of music and rhythm, Elder Alford became the quintessential drummer in his youth, an influence on drummers even today who admire his distinct style. His love for music wasn't limited to drums-he could often be found directing the church choir alongside his father as a small child and even as a child, he would lay hands praying in the spirit. It was clear that he carried on his father's legacy, both in the pulpit and behind the music stand, always striving to lift others up through song and prayer. Elder Donald L. Alford Jr. attended Harrison School during his elementary years. He went on to Washington High School, where he played varsity basketball, receiving several trophy awards until graduation.
During his teenage years, Elder Alford jokingly took on the moniker "Don Juan Irving Alford Jr.," combining his charm and basketball prowess into a name that matched his confidence and charisma. But it was his heart and devotion that truly defined him. Elder Alford attended Lake Michigan College. He graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1987. As time went on, he began to work for his father's business, Alford's Mortuary, where he worked until his health failed. Elder Alford was deeply loved by his children and grandchildren, and they were his greatest joy. His eyes would light up when he spoke of them, and his love for them was unconditional and fierce. His life revolved around his family, and he cherished every moment spent with those he held most dear. Known for his distinctive phrases, "Now look-a here," "You know," and "Shooooot," Elder Alford's presence in a room was magnetic. He could elicit laughter, reflection, and even conviction with a single word or look. He was a complex man who knew how to make others feel seen, heard, and loved. His life, a testament to resilience and faith, was shaped by numerous close calls with death. Time and again, Elder Alford stood at death's door, and time and again, the Lord spared him. It is fitting that he often preached from the Book of Revelation, speaking of the battles between good and evil, the trials of life, and the promises of God. His ministry was one of spiritual warfare, and he fought valiantly for his soul, never relenting in his trust in the Almighty.
Elder Donald Alford Jr. was a faithful Assistant Pastor of the Pentecostal Cathedral Church of God in Christ. He also served the Fourth Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Indiana North Central as the former Chief Adjutant from the Inception of the Jurisdiction until his health prevented him from doing so. Outside of the local and jurisdiction, Elder Alford was a Certified National Adjutant in the Church of God in Christ. He trusted God until the end. He was a man of great faith, life, laughter and perseverance. Although we are left shocked and heartbroken by his passing, we take solace in knowing that Elder Alford is now at peace, the pain he endured in his last years ended, and his faith now made sight before the throne of God. The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
Elder Alford was preceded in death by his stepson, Matthew Mitchell, his paternal grandparents, Deacon Odessa and Mable Alford, and his maternal grandparents, Deacon Wallace and Mary Harold. He leaves to cherish his memory. His wife Norma Jean, one son, Donald aka "D.J.", two daughters, Chassity (Aaron) Wills and Nicole affectionately known as Nicole Danielle Babadoll Alford, twelve grandchildren, Donnie, Dontrell, Anthony, Doniyah, D'Lana, Donyell, Donjae, Aaron Jr., Dezmon, Alijah, Mason and Isaac, four great grandchildren; His parents, Bishop Donald and Mary Alford, two sisters, Cecilia (Solomon) Anderson and Rachel Alford (Dishawn), two aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, the Pentecostal Cathedral church family, extended family, and a host of friends, all of whom will forever carry his memory in their hearts. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the words he spoke, and the love he shared. Rest well, Elder Alford, your battle is over, and you have entered into your eternal rest. Well done, good and faithful servant...
