Donald B. Cohen left this world on January 3rd, 2025, for his eternal rest. Don was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Hyman and Esther Cohen (both deceased). He was a wonderful brother to Martha Johnston (deceased) and Emily Herzig (deceased). He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Ann and brother, Howard Cohen, and many nieces and nephews. Don graduated from Cleveland Heights High School, and Case Western Reserve University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He was always involved in science and math beginning in high school where he won the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, based on the highest score in a competitive exam on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Don started his career at Goodyear Aircraft in Akron, Ohio and received a patent for: Vehicle Guidance System and Electron Image Matcher; then he went on to work as an engineer for North American Aviation in Columbus, Ohio.
Don and Sally married in Columbus on September 16th, 1967, and celebrated 58 happy years together. They moved to Los Angeles in 1968, and Don continued his engineering work at Hughes Aircraft and Interstate Electronics. Don finished his career at the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California. He was respected by his colleagues and was often able to come up with innovative ways to solve design and system problems. Don liked design work the best. He was happy to have worked his entire career on projects vital to the defense of the United States. Don kept in touch with many of his classmates from high school and often went back for class parties and reunions.
After retiring, Don and Sally spent many happy hours on their power boat, Hi Life, and cruised to San Diego and Catalina Island many times. Don and Sally were members of Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club; Huntington Harbour Yacht Club, and Seal Beach Yacht Club. Don sailed as a crew member in the Ensenda sailboat race from Newport Beach to Ensenda several times and in many local sailboat races. He was the Commodore of the Association of San Pedro Bay Yacht Clubs in 2005. Don was also a bicycle rider, and a great tennis player, and enjoyed chess. He was a Vice Commodore of the Aerospace Cruising and Sailing Club, and a member of the United States Power Squadron. He supported political candidates that believed in a strong defense for the United States, the Constitution, and the free enterprise system.
Don and Sally lived a wonderful life in Huntington Beach. They enjoyed their home, rose garden, and nearby beach activities. They felt lucky to live in one of the best cities in the world. Don and Sally visited many countries and enjoyed seeing the historical sites in Turkey and Greece. They visited Tahiti and this trip was one of their most memorable. Hawaii was also one of their favorite places. Don was a person who always believed in standing up for integrity and honesty, and for conservative ideals. He also had a great sense of humor and will be missed by his wife, Sally and many relatives and friends.
