Donald G. Floyd, affectionately known as a "Gentle Giant" with a heart full of faith and kindness, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025 at the age of 92. Born on August 29, 1932, in Wheeler, Texas, to Alfred Floyd and Mary (Ragan) Floyd, Don's life was one of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and joyful service.
On October 11, 1952, Don married the love of his life, Opal (Shrader), at Friendship Baptist Church in
Lincoln Park, Michigan. Their marriage was a testament to enduring devotion, spanning 72 ½ wonderful years. Together, they built a family grounded in love, laughter, and faith.
Don grew up between Texas and Oklahoma before making Michigan his home in 1952. He worked as a conductor for the railroad, dedicating 38 years of service to the industry he loved. Beyond his professional work, Don lived a life of purpose, serving faithful for decades at both Glen Eden Baptist Church and Friendship Baptist Church. At Glen Eden, he helped with the youth ministry and as a deacon at Friendship Baptist Church. He also had a unique gift for connecting with children, using his puppet ministry to share the love of Christ in creative and memorable ways. He delighted in teaching and ministering, always eager to talk to anyone about Jesus.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Opal; his children, Steve (Linda) Floyd and Cathy (Keith) Slupski; grandchildren, Ryan Woods and Josh Floyd; and great-grandchildren, Michaela Woods, Sophia Woods, and Brayden Woods. Don was preceded in death by his grandchildren Jason Floyd, Shawn Woods, and Aaron Woods, as well as his three brothers, one sister, and many dear friends.
A man of many passions, Don could often be found tinkering in his garage, enjoying garage sales, and listening to gospel music. He treasured his 1962 black-and-white Studebaker convertible, his domino games, and the simple joy of sitting on the porch talking about "the good old days." He loved sunsets, especially those shared with his daughter Cathy. On the night he passed, Cathy watched the sun sink below the horizon and she saw a vision of a "man in a white robe," a moment of peace and faith that reassured her that Dad was safely in God's hands.
Don was a man who loved deeply and lived fully. Known for his quick wit and one-liners-often saying "All Red," a railroad term for clear tracks-he brought joy and laughter wherever he went. Whether chasing mischievous kids down the church hallway on Friday nights, driving youth to Bambi Lake retreats, or playing dodgeball and eating pizza with them afterward, Don never lost his childlike spirit.
Those who knew him remember his warmth, his humor, and his steadfast love for his family, faith, and community. Don's legacy is one of service, laughter, devotion, and unwavering faith in Christ.
