Donald W. "Don" Greenwood, 86, of Linton, passed away peacefully with his family at his side at 1:13 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Greene County General Hospital in Linton. Born and raised in Linton to Hubert and Ruth (Berns) Greenwood, Don was proud to call the community his lifelong home.
Don graduated from Linton-Stockton High School with the Class of 1957, where he formed friendships that lasted the rest of his life. He attended college for a time before answering a higher calling and enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he faithfully served his country and carried those lessons of discipline and loyalty throughout his life. After his service, Don returned home to Linton and began what would become a 32-year career with General Electric, retiring as a supervisor in 1994. He took great pride in his work, and the sense of stability his career provided his family.
Beyond work, Don's heart was anchored in family and simple pleasures. He was a longtime member of Linton American Legion Post #22 and felt a deep bond with fellow veterans. He loved being outdoors - on a golf course with friends, with a fishing pole in hand on a quiet morning, or camping with those he loved. A lifelong love of history, Don enjoyed sharing stories and reflecting on how the world had changed over his 86 years. His greatest joy, though, was time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, where his steady presence, gentle humor, and quiet support will be deeply missed.
Don is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Rita A. (Dove) Greenwood, who was his closest companion and partner in all things. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Mark (Traci) Orr, Mike (Tammy) Greenwood, Lori (Mike) Kenly, and Pat (Nelmy) Greenwood. He was "Papaw" to his grandchildren, Kyle (Amy) Orr, Catelin Orr, Alex Orr, Gabriela Kenly, Tulio (Kimberly) Penida, and Michael (Keylin) McPhee, and "Papaw" to his great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Colton, Jack, Gavin, Julius, Tristin, Koby, Devon, Calie, and Emiliano Michael.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Barbara Richards; and his brother, Chuck Greenwood.
A memorial service with military honors to celebrate Don's life is pending at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton of Walton Funeral Service.
