Donald Leroy Hickey Jr., 84, of La Porte, IN, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at his home surrounded by family.
Don was born on December 11, 1939, in Jacksonville, IL, to Donald L. and Floreca M. (Lindsey) Hickey, Sr.
On May 1, 1965, in Chicago, IL, Don married Judith "Judie" Lahn, who survives. Also surviving are his 3 children, Paul (Debbie) D. Hickey of La Porte, Christopher (Paige Snider) J. Hickey of Washington D.C., and Laurie (Joseph) B. Majcher of Jarabacoa, D.R.; 4 grandchildren, Stella Grace Snider-Hickey of Washington D.C., J. Samuel Majcher of Jarabacoa, D.R., Levi Z. Majcher of Jarabacoa, D.R., and Sarah E. Majcher of Jarabacoa, D.R.; brother, James (Karen) S. Barfield of Jacksonville, IL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Chloe E. Majcher; sisters, Eva M. Buchanan and Shirley O Anderson; and brothers, LaVerne E. and Harry F. Hickey.
Don was a proud 20 year veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on a destroyer off the Cuban coast during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He earned his Journeyman at Washburne Trade School and later worked as a Tool & Die Maker at Sunbeam, Allis-Chalmers, Howmet, and Alcoa. Don was a member of La Porte Missionary Church. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, and listening to a variety of music.
Don valued quality time with his family. When his children were young, he coached several of their sports teams, including Little League and Handley Elementary football. Outside of sports, Don volunteered in the AWANA program, where his children attended.
Those who knew Don will attest to his faithfulness to both his family and the Lord. Don will be fondly remembered as a well loved husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Carl Galloway officiating. At a later date, burial will take place at Door Village Cemetery.
A time of visitation will be held from 1 - 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at the funeral home.
