Donald H. Hoffman

Donald H. Hoffman, 92, of Naples FL, formerly of Pittsburgh and Ligonier, PA, passed away February 9, 2026. He was born April 6, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Howard and Aline (Dickson) Hoffman. Donald was a graduate of West Virginia University, (Phi Beta Kappa), the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Industry, and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. In 1988, he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Transtar, Inc. in partnership with The Blackstone Group and USX Corporation. Transtar is a holding company with railroads, a Great Lakes Fleet, Barge Lines, and Dock Companies. He was formerly Vice President of U.S. Steel.
Mr. Hoffman served on active duty for three years in the U.S. Air Force and in the Air Force Reserve for six years, attaining the rank of Captain.
Mr. Hoffman served as Chairman of the Port Authority in Pittsburgh during the construction of the Transit Subway system and creation of the Three Rivers Regatta. He was Chairman of St. Clair Hospital and the Pennsylvania Railroad Association. He was a Director of U.S Steel and Carnegie Pension Fund, Latrobe Area Hospital, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Association of American Railroads, and advisory board of US Trust, Bank of America. Mr. Hoffman's club memberships include the Duquesne Club, Rolling Rock Club, Laurel Valley Golf Club, Royal Poinciana Golf Club, and the Naples Yacht Club.
Mr. Hoffman is preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Mary L. Hoffman, and a son R. Thomas Hoffman. He is survived by three sons, James D (Andrea)., Timothy R. (Kimberly) and Michael H. (Christine) Hoffman and ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert D. Hoffman.
There will be no public visitation, and all services are private for the family and under the direction of McCabe Funeral Home, Ligonier. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in his name to the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation One Mellon Way Latrobe, PA 15650.
