It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald "Donnie" Gentry Hopper, on February 13, at the age of 55, from sudden cardiac arrest.
"If ever there was a modern man born to be a pirate, it was Donald Gentry Hopper. He was in equal parts a rebel, an instigator, and an adventurer. When confronted with a Keep Out sign, Donnie would, of course, be the first one over the fence. Rules are not meant for pirates, you see. Even as a young man, Donnie was gifted with a boundless sense of humor, confidence, charisma, and a larger than life personality that would only grow larger over the years. He loved his woman, he loved hunting and fishing, he loved playing his guitar, and as we can all attest, he loved living life to the fullest with every chance he got. To all who knew him, Donnie was a good friend, and come rain or shine, he never took that for granted. He loved and appreciated everyone around him, and we loved him back. Donnie, you are the stuff of legend. Enjoy the sunset, brother, and save us all a seat on that boat." - Darel Parker (friend)
Donnie was preceded in death by this parents, Donald Dee Hopper and Elva June Hopper, and his oldest brother, Jimmie Bake Simpson. He is survived by the love of his life, Ivy Easterly, sister, Pamela Simpson, brothers Johnny Simpson, Grady Simpson, Sister-in-law Karen Simpson, sister Norma Miller (Mack), eight nieces and nephews and their families. He was also blessed with greatest of friends that he loved as family.
No surprise, there will NOT be a traditional service. When it gets warmer there will be a gathering at South Padre Island, and later at Port Mansfield, when his ashes will be spread in the East Cut, where he belongs.
