Donald Henry Illg, 93, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away on November 2, 2025.
Don was born on July 3, 1932, in St. Joe, Iowa, to Arthur and Rosalia Illg. He was one of twelve children. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
On September 1, 1958, Don was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Joyce" Illg in St. Joe. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Don began a career in farming until he and Joyce purchased the Chrome Truck Stop in Algona, which they operated until their retirement. After retiring, they moved to the Des Moines area to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Don enjoyed golfing and tennis in his younger days, but his greatest joy came from spending time and playing with his grandchildren. The family spent countless summer vacations making memories at Okoboji. Don will always be remembered for his deep love of family and his never-failing trust in God.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Rosalia, and his siblings Lucille, Francis, Dorothy, Edward, Harold, Alice, and George. He is survived by his siblings Marjorie, Alma, Ronald, and Rosa Lee.
He is also survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Joyce; his sons, Nicholas (Debbie), Patrick (Ann), and Michael (Heather); his grandchildren, Zachary (Holly), Summer (Matt), Samuel (Riley), Joseph, Sydney, and Jackson; and his great-grandchildren, Houston, Georgia, Frankie, and Lou.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the many acts of kindness and prayers during this time.
A visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on November 18, 2025, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church (7075 Ashworth Rd, West Des Moines, IA) with a Mass to follow at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served following services.
