Donald Eugene Lowery

 

Donald Eugene Lowery, fondly known as Don, was a remarkable man who lived a life filled with adventure, dedication, and love. It is with heavy hearts that we announce his passing on October 6, 2023, at Morningside Place in Overland Park, Kansas. He was born on January 15, 1940, in Midland City, Illinois to Louis and Beulah Lowery.

Don's journey through life was marked by diverse experiences that shaped him into the extraordinary person he became. After attending and graduating from Webber Township High School in Bluford, Illinois, Don embarked on a career that mirrored his adventurous spirit. Serving in the Navy was one of the honorable chapters of Don's life. His military service exemplified his dedication to upholding values such as bravery and selflessness. For many years, he worked as a fencer before transitioning to the noble role of a fireman. His commitment to serving and protecting others was unwavering throughout his life.

One of the qualities that made Don truly special was his ability to connect with people effortlessly. He never met a stranger and had an incredible sense of humor that he shared generously with everyone he encountered. With his constant jokes and playful pranks, there was never a dull moment when Don was around. He possessed the rare gift of being a phenomenal storyteller whose tales captivated audiences and left them wanting more.

Don's faith played an integral role in his life. A man deeply devoted to his beliefs, he found solace and strength in his spirituality. Above all else, Don cherished his family dearly and would do anything within his power to ensure their happiness and well-being.

During his leisure time, Don indulged in various hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy. He had an unbridled passion for working on motorcycles; they were not just machines to him but rather a gateway to freedom and adventure. In motorcycle circles, he earned endearing nicknames like "mountain man" and "ol fearless leader." Don also loved the tranquil serenity of boating and fishing, the thrill of hunting, the camaraderie of camping, and the excitement of traveling to new places. Don's love for music was evident through his ability to play the guitar with skill and finesse. In fact, it was his extraordinary talent, charm, and his iconic black Corvette convertible that won him the heart of his beloved wife, Jean.

Don leaves behind a legacy that will be etched in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His infectious laughter, kind-hearted nature, and exceptional zest for life will forever be cherished. Don is preceded in death by his parents; Louis and Beulah Lowery, his sister; Doris Kemp, his brother; Gary Lowery, and his son; Lonnie Carl Lowery. He is survived by his wife; Jean Lowery, his children; Paula Lowery (Jeff), Shelly Smith (Tyler), Dan Couch, Rich Couch (Richelle), and Levin Lowery (Sandy), his sister; Leona Shelton (Delbert), and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews in Missouri, Kansas, and California. 

Visitation services in honor of Don's life will be held on October 16, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, Missouri. This will be followed by a funeral service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the same location. A graveside service will then take place at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens in Independence from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
