Donald Harvey Neel passed away at his home north of McCook on Monday, February 16, 2026. He was 67 years of age. Don was born on March 16, 1958, to Stanley E. and Margaret D. (Barber) Neel at St. Catherine Hospital in McCook. He was the youngest of four children. Don spent his life doing what he loved, farming with his family!
He graduated from Republican Valley High School with the class of 1976. On November 29, 1980, he was united in marriage to Patricia Gates in Palisade, Nebraska. To this union four sons were born: Joshua Wayne, Ira James, Tyler Scott, and Bret Andrew.
Don enjoyed spending time with his boys and attending their many activities. The highlight of his life came later though, Don loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Russell; and father-in-law, Wayne Gates.
Those left to mourn his passing include his wife, Patricia; sons: Joshua (Amanda) of McCook, Ira of Gothenburg, Tyler (Hope), and Bret (Ariel) both of McCook; grandchildren: Faith, Levi, Jacob, MacKenzie, Oliver, Sara (whom Don had a very special bond with), Rilie, Lauren, and Dawson Neel, all of McCook; brother, Richard (Joyce) Neel of McCook; sister, Carlyn (David) Burkholder of North Platte; mother-in-law, Margaret Gates of Palisade; brother-in-law, Kirk Gates also of Palisade; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Cremation was chosen and memorial services are scheduled for 10:30 AM on Friday morning, February 20, 2026, at the Willow Christian Church in Indianola. Burial in the Indianola Cemetery will follow services. Don's family will greet friends from 4:00PM - 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook.
