Dr. Donald A. Pocock, FACP
Jun 5, 1947 - Dec 16, 2025
Dr. Donald A. Pocock, FACP of Winston-Salem, N.C. died the morning of December 16, 2026, following an extended battle with Alzheimer's disease. Don was born June 5, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio to Dr. Donald G. Pocock and Eleanor S. Pocock. He grew up in Massillon, Ohio the eldest of three siblings. In 1965 he enrolled at the College of Wooster and studied Chemistry and Theater. It was while a student at Wooster that he met the love of his life, Darby Jo Miller, his wife of over 55 years. Don went on to medical school at Case Western Reserve University where he excelled academically and was inducted to Alpha Omega Alpha. Following medical school, Don and Darby moved to Chapel Hill, N.C. for Don's internship and residency in the fields of internal medicine and infectious disease. Most of Don's clinical practice was in New Bern, N.C. where, in the 1980's, he found himself at the forefront of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Don accepted and cared for many AIDS patients at a time when the disease was stigmatized and poorly understood. His work garnered the respect of his peers, and he would go on to be inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. Later Don went on to lead hospital systems in Charleston, SC, Tampa, Fla., Clayton, N.C., and Morehead City, N.C. Throughout his career, Don focused on patient care and quality of life. He loved as he healed others.
Don was a man of many interests and passions. He loved nice clothing and was always well dressed earning him the moniker "Dapperdoc." He had a lifelog love of theater. He was actively involved in Footlight Theater in New Bern where he directed, designed, and performed in numerous productions. Cast parties at Don and Darby's were legendary. He loved travelling to see shows in New York and Stratford, Ontario. He cherished his annual trip to play golf with close friends at Pinehurst; a tradition that would last over 25 years. Don and Darby annually sang Handel's Messiah each holiday season surrounded by friends. Don even established a daycare and after school program. His active mind was always looking for ways to help others. In return, he was beloved. It was not uncommon for his family's kitchen to be overflowing with gifts of food at the holidays from the many people who expressed their gratitude for Don's medical expertise and personal concern.
Don is survived by his wife Darby; his sister, Debbie (Ric); his son, Don (Lynn); and his daughter, Becky (Kate) and he leaves four cherished grandchildren, Norie, Miller, Oliver, and Ava. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother David.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Salemtowne and the many people who helped care for Don in his final years. A remembrance will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Salemtowne Retirement Community in Winston-Salem or the
