I had the honor of working and studying under Professor Donald Redford during my time at Penn State as an undergraduate student. He is one of the few professors from my time at university who made a lasting impact on me.
When I started university in 2016, I had to fill out my schedule with the required electives. I wasn´t sure what to take, so I slotted in an Egyptian history course and a linguistics course since I had a mild interest in both topics at the time. I fell in love with both courses and was enraptured by ancient Egyptian history and culture. Whilst the material was fascinating, the instructor really made the course memorable. I could tell from the very first lecture that Professor Redford had an intimate understanding of and passion for Egyptology. When he would instruct, he wasn´t just speaking from memorized knowledge in textbooks, he was speaking from experience. Almost every lecture, I had additional questions, and he was always patient and sincere in answering them.
As the semester came to a close, I learned that his current TA would be departing, so I offered to TA for his course. He accepted, and I was thrilled to have an opportunity to get more familiar with the material and to spend more time with him. My time spent in the linguistics course also unearthed my interest in language and, specifically, in ancient languages. Professor Redford informed me of his course in Middle Egyptian, and I made sure to sign up for that as well.
Over the next few years until my graduation in 2020, I continued to TA for both Professors Donald and Susan Redford. I also was able to continue my education in the ancient Egyptian language with Professor Redford, getting valuable exposure to real texts and to his vast wealth of knowledge. It was always enjoyable listening to his personal accounts which he interspersed with his teaching, and I was eager to hear his opinions of various old and new Egyptology findings. His grasp of the ancient Egyptian language was quite a thing to behold.
I always appreciated Professor Redford´s humility. With his knowledge and experience, he had every right to boast, but I never saw him do so. He always treated me with respect even though I was just an undergrad and wasn´t even majoring in a relevant field. I am eternally grateful for the time that I had with Professor Redford, though I wish that I could have spent more time under his tutelage. It would have been a great honor to accompany him to a dig.
I wish his soul rest and comfort to his family.

First met Don in 1977 in Barrie, Ontario, when he spoke at the local history society about his work in Egypt. In the reception following he,having learned I was photographer on local archaeology survey, invited me to join his East Karnak Akhenaten Temple Project. That invitation changed my life. I was his photographer for many seasons and learned so much from of Ancient Egyptian history and culture. God rest your soul, Don. You were special.
