AYER: Donald F. Schaefer, Jr., 70, an Ayer resident for over 50 years, died Tuesday, January 13, 2026 quietly at home.

Donald was born at Fort Devens on November 5, 1955, a son of the late Donald F. Schaefer, Sr., and Lillian M. (Mulvihill) Schaefer and brother William J. Schaefer attended Ayer High School and later Sylvania Tech.

Following high school, Donald enlisted and served in the United States Navy.

He owned a successful landscaping company both in Florida and Littleton Massachusetts. During the off season he worked for Littleton Limo with his late brother-in-law Curtiss R. Herrmann and his sister Mary.

When he wasn't working, he enjoyed spending time with the family, fishing and hunting, especially trout fishing with his favorite brother-in-law on Sandy Pond. He also enjoyed camping, and when football season rolled around, he was right there cheering on his favorite team the Patriots and would be on the phone with his family rooting them on.

He leaves his daughter Shannon Lee Schaefer of Ft. Gaines, GA; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary C. and Craig Erban of Leominster; two nephews, Benjamin Herrmann, Gerald Herrmann; and his niece Justine Herrmann; three great nieces, Norah Herrmann, Vivian Herrmann and Eliza Herrmann; one great nephew, Chase LaVoie.

His funeral service will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 at 11AM in the Anderson Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Rd. Ayer, followed by a burial with military honors in St. Mary's Cemetery. A calling hour will be held from 10 to 11AM on Friday morning prior to the service.
