Donald Clovis Smith passed away Friday, October 17, 2025 at the age of 78. The family will receive friends 4-7 pm Thursday, October 30th at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Rd, Des Moines, Iowa. A private family service will be held on Friday with burial at Glendale Cemetery.
Don was born January 13, 1947 in Des Moines to Clovis and Dorothy (Russell) Smith. He grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1965. He then continued his education at Grand View College and Simpson College earning a Business degree. After graduation, Don married the love of his life, Colleen Sue Motis, on August 23rd,1969.
Don owned and operated Smith's Sewer Service, Inc. his whole adult life. He never retired and was proud to work alongside with his son Brent for the past 25 years. He was a master in the industry and loved to resolve the most challenging of jobs. He shared his knowledge and his love for the trade with many service technicians that he employed throughout his lifetime.
Smith's Sewer Service, Inc. was established in 1935 by George Smith (Don's grandfather), then continued by Clovis Smith (Don's father), then Don and now his son Brent - four generations.
Over the years, Don's interest included Tae Kwon Do reaching rank of 3rd degree black belt which both of his sons also participated in alongside. Don also enjoyed participating in local classic car shows showing o his "pride and joy" 1969 Corvette Stingray and modified 1974 Corvette Stingray. Prior to showing the 1974 Corvette, it was a project between father and son Chad in which the engine was completely rebuilt to a 383 cubic inch stroker after getting the idea from a Chevy Performance magazine. Also, Don enjoyed motorcycles and rode a Harley- Davidson for wind therapy when he had a chance. He'll be remembered for his amazing mechanical ability, sense of humor, and the most loyal Pepsi drinker.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Colleen Smith; children: Chad (Marni) Smith of Johnston, and Brent (Sarah) Smith of Johnston; grandchildren: Shane Smith, Alivia Smith, Gracee Smith, Ellee Smith; sister Sharyl (Edgar) Smith and twin brother Ronald Smith. Don was preceded in death by his parents.
