James Ervin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Westover Chapel on Feb. 14, 2026.
James Truman Ervin, known to most as Jim and affectionately as "Big Jim," passed away February 12, 2026, at the age of 80, surrounded by the love of his family. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life was defined by service, humor, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved.

Jim shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Rebecca (Haines) Ervin. Together, they built a home grounded in love, laughter, and commitment-one where family always came first. He was a proud and devoted father to Melissa Ervin Clark (Tony), Kris DeGraff (Jason), and Scott Ervin (Rachel). Of all his roles, few brought him greater joy than being "Grandpa" to his six cherished grandchildren: Isabel Fagen, Cole Fagen, Luke Fagen, Kinnick Ervin, Sully Ervin, and Truman Ervin. Jim's pride in his children and grandchildren was unmistakable, and no one ever questioned how deeply he loved and prioritized his family.

Family time was sacred to Jim. He never missed a sporting event-rain, snow, or shine-and could always be found cheering loudly from the stands. He was a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed traveling whenever the opportunity arose. Some of the most treasured memories were made during fishing and camping trips with family and friends, as well as countless visits to the Amana Colonies, where laughter flowed freely and traditions were built. These moments became stories that will be shared and cherished for generations.

Jim dedicated 38 years of his life to serving the City of Des Moines as a police officer. His career was marked by integrity, loyalty, and genuine care for others.

Known for his incredible kindness, Jim would do anything for anyone. He had a quick wit, a legendary sense of humor, and an infectious laugh that could instantly lift the spirits of those around him. An eternal optimist, Jim had a remarkable ability to find the good in every situation and remind others to do the same. His warmth, generosity, and joyful presence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Jim is also survived by his loving sisters, Linda Forst (David) and Janet Fallis (Roger), who shared a lifetime of memories with him. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Helen (Ehlers) Ervin and Truman Ervin and his sister Karen Hasher (Larry).

Jim's legacy lives on through the family he adored, the lives he touched through service and friendship, and the countless memories filled with love, laughter, and joy.
