Donald Eugene Smith, 92, of Ankeny passed away peacefully, April 14, 2025.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny (517 SW Des Moines St.) Funeral service at 11:00 a.m. followed by lunch. The service will be livestreamed at https://bit.ly/htlc-funeral. Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 23, at Bingham Township in Woden, Iowa at 11:00 a.m.

Don was born July 1, 1932, in Woden, Iowa to Ralph and Mae Smith. He attended Woden High School and graduated in 1949. He later graduated from Waldorf Junior College in Forest City, Iowa in 1952 and served in the Army from 1953 to 1955. Don married Arlene Hayungs on December 4, 1955. He then graduated from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa in 1958.

Don was employed within the marketing department of Sunray DX and Sun Oil Co. for 30 years at many different locations around the United States. He took early retirement in 1987 and moved back to Iowa.

Don was active in church activities within many congregations. He served on the Arkansas/Oklahoma Synod Council and on the Alumni Board of Waldorf College. Don and his wife, Arlene traveled extensively, enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and loved to be involved with their children and grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife, Arlene; his daughters, Debra and Denise (Tom) Senn, and son Douglas (Althea) Smith; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews, his three brothers Roger (Pat), Darwin (Cheryl), and Dennis (Linda).

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
