In March of 2025, Donald was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in his pancreas and liver. He passed away on June 14, 2025, at the Sanford hospital, with his wife of 43 years, by his side.

Donald Lee Songer was born in Dickinson, ND, on May 30, 1956, to William and Eleanor Songer. William left the family when Donald and his brother Ronald were very young. Eleanor remarried Ronald Alm, an instructor in the Air Force. As a military family, he and his siblings lived in many countries and all over the U.S., attending numerous schools. Out of school, he joined the Navy. Donald was very proud of being a Veteran. He continued a lifelong friendship with his Navy buddy and best friend, Mike Benson. After the navy, he married his first wife, Donna, and had a son, Donovan Songer. Upon the ending of the first marriage, he later fell in love and married Doris Crawford and made her his wife. They had two beautiful children, Heather and Nickolas. They lived in Illinois where Donald drove truck for many years. Trucking moved the family to North Dakota, where Donald had his beginnings, and they have lived here in North Dakota since 1995. North Dakota became their forever home. He purchased his dream home, outside of Richardton North Dakota, 24 years ago. Don loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. For a time, he enjoyed boating and fishing. Two of his biggest passions were working in his yard and around the house and cooking. Nothing made Don happier than cooking for those he loved.

Donald was preceded in Death by his grandparents, his birth father, William Songer, Mother, Eleanor Alm, stepfather, Ronald Alm, niece, Lyndsey Alm. Donald is survived by his brothers, Ronald Songer, Joseph Alm, and sisters, Norma Rebout, and Connie Lukens, his wife Doris E. Songer, his daughter, Heather Lynn Songer-Kaminsky, son-in-law, Josh Kaminsky and their children, (grandchildren) Noelle Elaine and Caleb Steven Kaminsky, his son, Nickolas Lee Songer, daughter-in-law, Imee Santos Songer, and their children, (grandchildren) Isabelle Lilah Songer and Alexandra Nicole Songer. Donald is also survived by his son, Donovan Songer and his wife Megan Songer, and their children, Lindsey, Kristen, and Aaron Songer.

We take comfort in knowing he is now with God in Heaven and is no longer suffering.

Donald was deeply loved by those who knew him well, and Donald will be missed.
