Donald Thon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Family Life Funeral Homes - Pickford (formerly Galer FH) on Jan. 6, 2026.
Donald "Donny" Ray Thon Jr., beloved brother, father, and son, age 65, of Cedarville, Michigan, died on December 17, 2025, at Medilodge of Sault Ste. Marie. He was born on November 10, 1960, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to Donald Sr. and Elaine (Gibbons) Thon.

Donny was raised in Cedarville and graduated from Cedarville High School. During his school years, he was an avid and accomplished cross-country runner, holding a school record for many years. He also enjoyed playing basketball and running track. Following high school, Donny moved to Auburndale, Florida, where he worked at a brewery for several years.

After returning to Cedarville, Donny married and was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Sandi, whom he loved dearly and who meant the world to him.

Donny worked for Gen Hardwood Sawmill on Drummond Island for three years before transferring to Maples Sawmill, where he dedicated twenty-two years of service as head sawyer.

For over twenty years, Donny made his home on Simmons Road in Hessel, where he cherished the peace, quiet, and beauty of the outdoors. He loved ice fishing and was especially known for his ability to clean a perch with ease. A natural jokester, Donny delighted in playing practical jokes and bringing laughter to those around him. He also enjoyed helping his beloved stepfather with gardening, cutting wood, and mowing grass. A lifelong sports fan, Donny loved watching and tracking sports; even after suffering a stroke, he could still recall and name baseball players from the 1960s.

Donny is survived by his mother and stepfather, Elaine and Marvin Charld; brother, Jeff Thon; sisters, Kelly (Jim) Kopko, Pennie (Mark) Clymer, and Shannon (Dave) Vonderwerd; daughter, Sandi (Chance) Vorpagel; niece, Jessie Thon; nephew, Tanner Howland; his beloved cat, Airmon; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald "Sonny" Thon Sr.

Per Donny's wishes, no services will be held at this time.
