Donald graduated from Stephenson High School in 1957. Following graduation he worked for Bacco Construction. He then served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964 with his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He spent his military service testing a variety of military vehicles at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Donald was also in the Army reserves for two years following his service in the Army.

On July 18, 1964, Donald married the former Rose Ann Kleiman at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Spalding, MI. Donald and Rose Ann later became members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church of Bark, River, MI, where he served as an usher.

Donald worked for St. John Forest Products and then Mead Paper Company as a Pipefitter, where he retired after 31 years.

He was a supporter of high school sports, attending many basketball, football, and volleyball games. He and Rose were members of the Delta Merry Mixers Square Dance Club and camping group. Donald was a member of Highland Golf Club where he scored a hole-in-one on hole 4 on August 12, 2002. He enjoyed camping, golfing, bowling, snowmobiling, watching football and baseball, taking bus trips to various parts of the United States, watching old westerns and game shows, and reading western-themed novels. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Donald is survived by his wife Rose Ann; daughters, Bonnie (Mark) Philipps of Wallace, MI, Diane (Mark) Schram of Spalding, MI, Donna (David) Greer of De Pere, WI, and Laura Webber (Brian Messersmith) of Wilson, MI.
