Donald N. Wilce, known affectionately to all as Don, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, surrounded by his family. Born on June 9, 1935, in Simpson, a son of the late James and Christine (Wagner) Wilce. Don lived a full and vibrant life that touched many with his loving, friendly, and faith-filled spirit.
Don's early years were spent in the close-knit community of Simpson, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a strong sense of duty and service. He was a proud graduate of Forty Fort High School, class of 1952, and furthered his education at Wilkes Barre Business College, laying a solid foundation for his future endeavors.
Answering the call of his country, Don served in the United States Army during the Korean War, demonstrating the courage and patriotism that would be a hallmark of his character throughout his life. Upon returning home, he embarked on a career that saw him work at Sardoni Enterprise, and after a move to Georgia, at Muskin Pool Co. His love for community shone brightly upon his return to Pennsylvania, where he served as a cherished crossing guard in Millville. Don's conversations with the children he helped cross the streets were moments of joy and care that he treasured until his retirement in 2023.
Don's devotion to his faith and community was evident in his active involvement with the Saint Vincent De Paul, the Holy Name Society, and serving as an Extra Ordinary Minister. His leadership and compassion were also recognized through his roles as a past Lions Club Member and as a dedicated member of Christ of King Church in Benton.
On October 10, 1964, Don married the love of his life, Mary C. Williams, and together they built a family filled with love and laughter. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, leaving behind his devoted wife Mary, their three children: Mary Bonnie Engleman and husband Toby Faircloth of Milton, Dr. Kerrie Hoffman and husband John of Benton, and Donald Mark Wilce and wife Amy of Swoyersville; his adoring seven grandchildren: Vanessa, Alyssa, Christina, Brandon, Jesse, Ashley, Nicholas; and his cherished six great-grandchildren: Destiny, Aryia, Stella, Bennett, Oakland, Grayson. His faithful dog, Dusty, will miss his gentle presence and the warmth of his companionship.
Don's passion for life was evident in his many interests. He was an avid fisherman. His love for sports, particularly basketball and football, was not just as a spectator but also as a mentor, as he coached elementary students in basketball. Music brought melody to his life, with old-time tunes often filling the rooms of his home. War movies captivated his attention, a nod to his military service and the heroes he held in high regard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday September 23, 2025 at 10:00 am at Christ the King Church, 300 Mendenhall Lane, Benton with the Very Rev. Richard Mowery officiating.
