Donald “Donny” Zahnd, age 56, of Melbourne, Iowa, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, September 12 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A funeral service has been scheduled for Saturday, September 13 starting at 2:00 P.M., also at the funeral home. Pastor Emily Blue will be officiating. Donald will be laid to rest at the Melbourne Memorial Garden in Melbourne, Iowa. Everyone is encouraged to dress in casual or Iowa State attire. Memorials may be directed to the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Mitchell Family Funeral Home of Marshalltown has been entrusted with the care of Donald and his family. Donald Ray Zahnd was born on August 12, 1969 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Robert Zahnd and Janet Tiger. Donny attended West Marshall High School and graduated with the class of 1987. He continued his education at Bismark State College, where he obtained his associates degree. Donald proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. During his working career, he worked for ULC as a transformer technician and was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local # 204. In his free time, Donald enjoyed carpentry, socializing, and spending time with his family. Donald was also known as a handyman, a talker, a jokester, and an Iowa State fan.
Left to cherish his memory are his four daughters: Megan (Haley) Zahnd of North Carolina, Savannah Zahnd of Melbourne, Josilyn Zahnd, and Lilian Zahnd, both of State Center, IA.; his four grandchildren: Dakota Zahnd, Harper Zahnd, William Gutierrez Cantu and Adalyn Nava Zahnd; his siblings: Debra Creason of Waterloo, Charles Zahnd of Des Moines, and Kenneth (Penny) Zahnd of Marshalltown; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents Robert Zahnd and Janet Tiger; his nephew Danny Zahnd; and his great nephew Ethan Zahnd.
