Obituary for Donna Combs Dick (Combs)
Donna Combs Dick, 92, of Frederick County, VA, died on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family.
Born in 1933 in Hardy County, West Virginia, to the late Lonnie and Elsie Combs, she moved to Frederick County in 1938. She graduated from James Wood High School in 1952 and the nursing program at the Winchester Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, earning her license as a Registered Nurse in 1955.
In May 1954 she married her high school sweetheart, Richard "Dickie" Dick, and enjoyed a lifelong journey of service and family. Along with her husband, she loved to travel and held as essential the idea that one should never stop learning, traits that she continuously emphasized to her children.
Her Christian faith and a strong belief in social justice, fairness, and trying to help the less fortunate were guiding principles that shaped and anchored her approach to life. These values and the experience of her family and friends during the Great Depression and World War II led her to long and active participation in politics, particularly with the Democratic Party. She believed that character and integrity were essential in life and in public service.
Donna was a mentor to many and her insight and compassion touched all who knew her. Her sharp sense of humor was another facet of her personality that lifted spirits in challenging circumstances. Most of all, however, Donna was a friend to all she met and a tireless champion of constructive causes and people working to make our world a better place.
In the community, she served as Moderator of the Presbyterian Women, Elder, and chair of the Bereavement Committee at the First Presbyterian Church in Winchester and was a former member of the Frederick County Social Services Board, Women's Auxiliary Virginia State Horticultural Society, the James Wood Athletic Association, the Winchester-Frederick County 2020 Committee, the Winchester-Frederick County
American Heart Association, and was appointed to the Blue Ridge Parkway Commission by Governor Charles Robb. Active with the Democratic Party on all levels, she was a delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention.
Donna is survived by her sons Michael, Thomas (Alisa), and Timothy (Karen) and daughter-in-law Kathy, grandchildren Lauren, Andrew, Meredith, and Ryan, and 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and second cousins with whom she maintained close contact throughout her life. Her husband passed away in 2016. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Victor, Blair, Lonnie, and Eugene.
A celebration of life service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 116 S. Loudoun Street, Winchester, VA 22601, on Monday January 19, 2026, at 1:00pm. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make memorial contributions to Hospice of Blue Ridge, the Donna C. Dick Nursing Scholarship at Shenandoah University, or the Richard G. Dick Scholarship at Laurel Ridge Community College.
