Donna Mae Schaefer, age 90, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Majestic Heights in Hartford, Wisconsin.
Donna was born on February 8, 1935, in Slinger, Wisconsin, to Austin and Florence (née Schubert) Sonnenberg. On June 26, 1954, she married the love of her life, Robert "Bobby" Schaefer. Together they shared 64 beautiful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family.
Donna's greatest joy came from spending time with her family-especially watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in their sporting events, something she faithfully did until her health no longer allowed. She also loved bowling, polka dancing, traveling with family and friends, and cherished time spent up north at the trailer. Her weekly coffee dates at McDonald's with her close circle of friends brought her great happiness, as did the companionship of her beloved cat, Tootie, who was always by her side.
Donna is lovingly survived by her children: Mark (Dora) Schaefer, Kathleen (Joe) Lechner, and Patsy Schaefer; her grandchildren: Sam (Sara) Mountjoy, Carley (Dan) Bogdan, Greg (Kory) Schaefer, Amanda (Rick) Jahn, Blake (fiancée Denise) Lechner, and Dylan (Kristin) Roethle; great-grandchildren: Morgan (Skylar) Cain, Hudson Mountjoy, Lincoln Mountjoy, Brynn Bogdan, Laila Roethle, Conor Roethle, Lennon Lechner, Charliee Schaefer, Isla Schaefer, and Jack Jahn; brother, Robert (Cindy) Roecker; sister-in-law, Sharon Schaefer.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Schaefer; son, John Schaefer; grandson, David Lechner; her parents; sisters, Shirley Wolf and infant sister Juanita Sonnenberg; niece Kay Zuern and stepfather, Arthur Roecker.
She was also preceded in death by many extended family members whom she held close to her heart.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Paul Bullis for his many years of compassionate care, the dedicated staff at Majestic Heights-especially Margo-for their loving support, and Horizon Hospice for their guidance and kindness during Donna's final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Donna's honor may be made to Majestic Heights or the Humane Society of Washington County.
Memorial Services for Donna will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at St. Kilian Catholic Church (264 W State St., Hartford, WI 53027). Family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00 a.m. until the start of Mass at 12:30 p.m. Inurnment will take place the following day at St. Kilian's Catholic Church Cemetery.
