Donnie Capps Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Underwood Funeral Home - Smithfield on Feb. 26, 2026.
Smithfield - Donnie Lee Capps, age 74, passed peacefully into his eternal home on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at his residence in Smithfield, surrounded completely by his devoted family who never left his side.

Born on August 1, 1951, in Johnston County, Donnie was the son of the late Herman W. Capps and Maude Toler Capps. He was also preceded in death by his beloved sisters, Mary Rose Pope, Esther Baker, and Berona "Blondie" Capps, and his brother, James Capps.

Donnie was a member of Smithfield Church of God and, in recent years, attended Tee's Chapel FWB Church. His faith was a steady foundation in his life - quiet but strong - guiding the way he loved, served, and cared for others.

Above all else, Donnie was a family man. He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Pauline Wiggins Capps. As a father, he was steady, supportive, and proud beyond measure of his sons, Donald Capps and wife Beth of Monroe, and Michael Capps and wife Dawn of Cornelius. He found immense joy in watching his family grow and flourish.

His greatest delight came in being "Granddad." He treasured every moment with his grandchildren - Tyler Capps (Amber), Jonathan Capps (Sarah), and Dillon Capps (Becca Dyer). Becoming a great-grandfather brought him even more happiness, and he adored Waylon Capps and Bentley Capps.

Donnie is also survived by his brother, J.T. Capps and wife Ginger of Smithfield; his sister, Jean Ganter and husband J.J. of Pennsylvania; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who were like family to him.

A man known by many nicknames - each given with affection by lifelong friends - Donnie had a gift for making connections that lasted a lifetime. He loved the outdoors and never passed up the opportunity to go deer hunting. Hunting was more than a pastime; it was a passion that brought him peace and countless cherished memories. He also loved fishing and spending time outside. Many of his happiest moments were spent in the woods, by the water, or gathered with family sharing stories of the day's adventures.

At home, he was rarely without his loyal companions - his beloved granddogs, Remmington and Ruger, and his faithful sidekick, D.J. They brought him daily joy and constant companionship.

Donnie's life was marked by loyalty, quiet strength, humor, and unwavering love. He lived for his family, and they always knew they could count on him. His legacy is one of devotion - to his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his faith, and his friends. He leaves behind a family bonded by love and strengthened by the example he set.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in Bakers Chapel Church Cemetery, with Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating.

Though he will be deeply and sorely missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace and that his love will continue to guide them for years to come. He has gone home!
