Doreen M. Benson, 73, beloved wife of Craig E. Benson, passed away on October 4, 2024. She was born on February 9, 1951, in New Haven, CT, the daughter of the late Edmund and Rosina Balisciano.
Doreen and Craig began their 37 year marriage in the town of Cheshire, CT, moved to Durham, CT in 2004 and settled for the last several years in Monmouth, ME. Above all, Doreen adored her children and grandchildren. Close behind were her rescue dogs, who she doted on just as much as the rest of her family. The family cottage at Androscoggin Lake in Wayne, Maine was Doreen’s happy place. Sitting on the deck looking out at the lake and listening to the Loons while surrounded by the love and laughter of her family (and of course the dogs) are what Doreen loved most. Doreen often found the ordinary things in life whimsical and could always find beauty in what others might consider mundane. Doreen and her husband Craig spent much of their time together exploring nature and cultivating their understanding of the world around them. Doreen was an avid reader, a curious soul and a quiet observer. She had a quick wit and a pure heart, and she loved fiercely. She is missed dearly by all that had the honor to know her and to be loved by her.
In addition to her loving husband, Craig, Doreen leaves behind her beloved sons, Gerard (Marla Horowitz) Nutcher of Cheshire, CT and Brian (Rachel) Nutcher of Wallingford, CT; her cherished grandchildren, Norah and Evan Nutcher and Brayden and Connor Nutcher; her brothers, Edmund (Denise) Balisciano and Richard (Elaine) Balisciano; nephews, Kristofer (Lindsay) Balisciano and Jason (Amy) Balisciano; nieces, Jessica (Bobby) Roberts and Stephanie (Steven Annecharico) Balisciano.
Doreen also leaves behind her much loved sisters-in-law, Tracy Benson and her partner Sarah Eldridge, Elizabeth Benson and Laurie (John) Hanley along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Along with her extended family she leaves behind her dearest friend and sister of her heart, Judy Sylvan and husband Harvard.
In addition to her parents, Doreen was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Maurice M. Benson and beloved nephew, Michael V. Hunihan.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 4pm-7pm at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home, 615 South Main St., Cheshire. A Celebration of Life Service for Doreen will begin at 4pm with the calling hours to follow. Burial will be private.
