Doreen Gamble Burgess, age 101, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025 at White Oak Manor. She was a native of Folkestone, Kent, England, the only child of Percy S. and Doris Pain Gamble, both deceased.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth B. Mangum and husband, Don; a granddaughter and great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Geoffrey Edwin Burgess.
One of the original GI Brides of WW II, Doreen came to Burlington in March 1946, and was employed for several years at Western Electric in a secretarial capacity, later at Home Security Life Insurance Company, Carolina Biological as secretary to Dr. Powell, and for over 37 years secretary in the firm of Louis C. Allen, She was a life member of Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association, being awarded such at the convention in Denver, Colorado in 1998 for her service to such organization, as a member of the Bylaws Committee, and in various secretarial capacities at branch, and Area level, holding the office of Area/Postal Secretary for the Carolinas for over 30 years.
A gathering for family and friends will be from 2-4PM on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory. Her cremains will be returned to her birthplace in Folkestone, Kent, England.
